Date: Thu, 28 Aug 1997 09:22:04 +0100 (BST) Hi, I just installed Emacs 19.34.4 on my Win95 machine at work. Everything worked fine except any shell related commands (shell, shell-command, compile, etc), which just gave up with no output. I finally tracked the problem to the resident anti-virus software they install on our machines - Dr Solomon's WinGuard. If "Scan all files" is on, shells don't work. Turning "Scan all files" off solved the problem (it still scans executables, FWIW). I don't know if it's a bug in WinGuard or Emacs, but I thought you might be interested. Chris. Doing LaTeX outside emacs in a separate DOS box was not a problem, hence it has something to do with emacs (or auctex). After uninstalling this anti-virus tool, everything worked fine again.
